Frequently asked questions
What posted signs are required in a Florida licensed childcare facility?
Florida DCF requires the following posted signs in licensed childcare facilities:
- Licensed Capacity Sign (one per classroom or activity room)
- Emergency Evacuation Route Diagram (one per room)
- Hand Hygiene Instructions (near diaper changing areas, food prep areas, and restrooms)
- Diaper Changing Procedure Poster (at every changing area)
- No Smoking Notice
- Daily Activity/Schedule (posted in a parent-accessible area)
- Weekly Meal/Snack Menu (if food is provided)
- Florida Minimum Wage Poster
- Federal labor law posters (FLSA, OSHA, EEO/Know Your Rights, EPPA, USERRA)
- Florida state employer posters (Workers' Compensation, Child Labor Law, and others)
Facilities in Broward, Hillsborough, Palm Beach, Pinellas, or Sarasota County may have additional local requirements.
What documents does DCF inspect for in a Florida daycare?
During an inspection, DCF verifies that your facility has required posted signs displayed correctly, required logbooks maintained and up to date, staff credentials and background screening records on file, enrollment and health records for each child, and written policies available for review. Missing or incomplete documentation is one of the most common reasons facilities receive citations, and it's entirely preventable.
What happens if I fail a DCF inspection?
If DCF finds violations during an inspection, they issue a citation for each one. You'll be given a corrective action period to fix the issues, after which a follow-up inspection is conducted. Repeated or serious violations can result in fines, license probation, or license revocation. All inspection results including violations are publicly visible in Florida's CARE database, which parents use when researching childcare options. Staying inspection-ready protects your license and your reputation.
How often does DCF inspect Florida childcare facilities?
DCF is required to inspect licensed childcare facilities at least once per year. Inspections are unannounced with no advance notice given. Facilities with prior violations are often inspected more frequently. The best approach is to operate as if an inspector could walk in any day, because they can.
What is The Compliance Shelf?
The Compliance Shelf is a Florida-based shop that provides compliance documents, required posted signs, and inspection prep tools built specifically for Florida DCF-licensed childcare facilities. Instead of spending hours tracking down what you need from multiple sources, everything is in one place, already formatted, verified against DCF requirements, and ready to post or file.
Are your products specific to Florida DCF requirements?
Yes. Everything we sell is built specifically for Florida licensed childcare facilities. We don't sell generic national compliance products. Our posted signs, logbooks, and document templates are based on the Florida Child Care Facility Handbook and Florida-specific employer posting laws, so what you're getting is actually relevant to your DCF inspection, not just compliance in general.
How quickly will I receive my order?
Digital products are delivered instantly. You'll receive a download link by email the moment your order is confirmed. Printed items ship within [X business days] and arrive within [X-X business days] depending on your location in Florida.
Are your products updated when requirements change?
Yes. When DCF updates its requirements or Florida's minimum wage changes, which triggers a mandatory poster update, we update the affected products. This is one of the main reasons The Compliance Shelf exists. Generic national poster companies don't track Florida DCF-specific changes. We do.
Do I need anything extra if I'm in Broward, Hillsborough, Palm Beach, Pinellas, or Sarasota County?
Possibly. These five counties self-administer childcare licensing under a state exemption, which means they may have posting or documentation requirements beyond the standard DCF baseline. If you're in one of these counties, we recommend checking with your local licensing office to confirm any additional requirements and reaching out to us so we can point you toward the right products for your county.
Can I use your products as proof of compliance during a DCF inspection?
Our products are designed to meet the requirements outlined in the Florida Child Care Facility Handbook and applicable federal posting laws. However, The Compliance Shelf is not a law firm and our products do not constitute legal advice. We always recommend verifying your specific requirements directly with DCF or a licensed compliance professional. Our products are a tool to help you get compliant and stay that way, not a substitute for that verification.
